Sony has said the online gaming services for its PlayStation console are returning to normal after an apparent cyber attack on Christmas Day which also affected Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.

Sony sent out a tweet this morning to notify users that its PlayStation Network was running again. "Update: PS4, PS3, and Vita network services are gradually coming back online - thanks for your patience,” the tweet read.

The attack, claimed by a group of hackers called Lizard Squad, meant that downloaded games could not be played gamers, preventing them from competing against others online.

According to Sky News it is though the hacking group could be Russian given that a link on its Twitter site was originally a Russian-based domain.

Lizard Squad also claimed responsibility for attacks on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live earlier this month.

The attack occurred following the hack on Sony over The Interview, a film which depicts North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, and let to international fallout. On Chritmas Eve Sony reversed its decision pull the controversial film starring Seth Rogan and James Franco.
