Activia and Shakira top the most shared ad list of 2014 so far, with Monty the Penguin at 17

Activia’s World Cup ad with Shakira is the top shared ad of 2014, research by Unruly has found, racking up 5,819,822 shares across Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere to also become the most shared advert ever.

“Activia’s collaboration with Shakira for the video ‘La La La’ rose to the top by capitalising on World Cup fervour and the current trend for ‘trackvertising,’ where a brand and musical artist co-release a video which is both a musical track and an ad.

“Releasing the spot with Shakira - who this summer became the first person to reach 100 million Facebook likes - and tying the campaign to a social cause by partnering with the World Food Programme all contributed to the success of this record-breaking video,” said Unruly’s EMEA MD Oliver Smith.

A fifth of this year’s Top 20 Global Social Video Ads Chart were either World Cup-themed or created by sponsors, with two Nike ads also making the top ten.

However, more recent ads have already been able to slip their way up the ranks, including BBC music’s God Only Knows and the 2014 John Lewis Christmas ad starring Monty the Penguin.

Smith also noted that the speed of social sharing has increased from 2013.

He said: “We saw 42 per cent of shares occur in the first three days following campaign launch - up from 25 per cent in 2013. With such a change in pace, it’s more vital than ever that brands support their social videos with paid media in this critical launch phase or they risk losing out on potential online buzz.”

2: 20th Century Fox - Devil Baby Attack

This prank-vertising video has been shared 2,153,236 times.

3: Nike - The Last Game

The first of two Nike ads on the list, this clocked up 2,151,148 shares.

4: Budweiser - Puppy Love

The only Super Bowl spot on the list, it clocked up 1,976,253 shares.

5: Cardstore - World’s Toughest Job

This sweet mother's day ad led to 1,894,721 shares

6: Wren - First Kiss

The ad that led to hundreds of people doing their own video racked up 1,548,628 shares.

7: Always - #LikeAGirl

The confidence-boosting video was shared 1,482,633 times.

8: Nike - Winner Stays

The second Nive video of the list led to 1,431,721 shares.

9: Thai Life Insurance - Unsung Hero

This ad clocked up 1,289,592 shares.

10: DTAC - The Power of Love

The last video in the top ten was shared 1,101,023 times.
