Apple has adopted China’s most popular payment service UnionPay in a bid to make it easier for consumers to purchase apps in the region.

The UnionPay deal makes app purchases easier

As a result of the agreement, many Chinese iOS users will be able to purchase apps using their debit and credit cards where previously they had to rely upon a top-up system using cards worth a minimum of 50 yuan.

Now apps are that bit easier to purchase and Chinese users can now pay exact quantities directly from their bank accounts.

Eddy Cue, senior vice president of internet software and services at Apple, said: “The ability to buy apps and make purchases using UnionPay cards has been one of the most requested features from our customers in China.

“China is already our second largest market for app downloads, and now we’re providing users with an incredibly convenient way to purchase their favourite apps with just one-tap.”

UnionPay has distributed over 4.8 billion cards worldwide greatly opening up payment options on the app store. Users will be required to download a UnionPay app and link it to their Apple ID.

The agreement comes as Apple also considers entering a long-term deal with Alibaba’s banking branch AliPay in a possible Apple Pay collaboration.
