Mindshare's Huddle 2014: Oculus Rift, drones, and a CSI case to solve

Mindshare kicked off its biggest Huddle event yet yesterday (13 November), with more than 140 individual events led by industry leaders, entrepreneurs, academics and celebrities. delving into what’s shaping the future of media.

The day, described as an “interactive non-conference”, for which The Drum is media partner, is held over two floors in Mindshare’s St Giles offices, with up to 25 different session held at any one time.

The theme of Huddle 2014 was ‘Inspire & Invent’, and saw delegates given the chance to experiment with technology like Oculus Rift, drones and brain mappers.

Professor Robert Winston kicked off day in one session by examining what makes people creative. In front of a packed audience he discussed the characteristics of the human brain and how you can influence its performance to have those ‘eureka’ moments.

Simultaneously, The Drum hosted its own session with Beau Lotto, founder of Lottolab, who also illuminated the brain's visual system and explained why humans think the way they do.

A few hours later, the Telegraph's digital content director, Kate Day, and visual journalist, Lewis Whyld, hosted a group to look at how drones, 360-degree cameras, Oculus Rift and 4G live streaming have transformed the potential for investigative journalism – and the power they might hold for brands.

But the most popular session of the day for many proved to be ESI Media's CSI-style investigation.

Dressed in full overalls, latex gloves and paper shows, the participants were asked to solve a murder case alongside real-life detectives and forensic experts.

Just a few rooms away, other delegates battled it out to see if they had what it took to survive a zombie apocalypse in a Huddle hosted by JCDecaux.

The hashtag #mshuddle trended in London throughout the day, driving 11.3 million estimated impressions from 3,906 Twitter mentions.
