A sound installation built to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall has been viewed 75,000 times since being switched on three days ago.

Devised by creative agency Grey Berlin in tandem with SoundCloud the Berlin Wall of Sound plays an acoustic reconstruction of the concrete barrier, felled a quarter of a century ago at the end of the Cold War.

This employs SoundCloud’s custom signature waveform player for visualising sound waves by synchronising multiple images behind the audio signature. The resulting 7:32 min long piece, timed to match the period needed for sound to travel the 155km length to which the original wall snaked, is tagged with the single sounds of victims caught trying to cross.

In a statement Grey said: “The Berlin Wall of Sound“ is no Easy Listening and hard to stand. But how much harder to bear was a life locked behind the Wall. SoundCloud and Grey Berlin dedicates the The Berlin Wall of Sound to all the victims of the Wall – and all the people who suffer from today’s existing walls.”
