UK based online retailers are bringing forward their Christmas promotions to get the ball rolling early on the key festive market this week in an aggressive drive to grow international orders and win a slice of the lucrative holiday market.

The findings follow a survey of 300 SMEs which found that price is the most persuasive tool in luring cost conscious consumers to their websites, both at home and abroad, with 57 per cent plumping for the brute force technique.

Royal Mail meanwhile report that 64 per cent of those who export expect international orders to grow as a proportion of all sales, building on a strong 2013 showing in which 51 per cent of exporting UK SME businesses expected strong international growth, particularly in the USA which remains the single largest market.

Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “Royal Mail’s study of UK’s SME online retailers shows competition for customers will start earlier this year, with price promotions the key tactic for online retailers as well as offering free delivery and returns to their shoppers.

“Royal Mail has also been preparing for the busy festive period and is opening a dedicated network of parcel sort centres to handle the additional volume we experience every Christmas.”
