Apple chief Tim Cook is breaking open the champagne after reporting ‘record breaking’ sales of the newly launched iPhone 6 which promises to set up a very merry Christmas for the Cupertino based technology firm.

Strong demand for the new devices saw Apple ship 39.27m smartphones in the fourth quarter, up from just 33.79m in the same period last year. This surge drove revenues up 12 per cent to $42.1bn, with profits rising slightly more, up 13 per cent to $8.47bn.

The late boost caps a strong year for the smartphone maker’s iPhone and iPad divisions, which chalked up revenues of $182.8bn and $39.5bn profits.

Cooing over the figures Cook labelled demand as ‘off the charts’ and he had ‘never felt so great’, adding: ‘We’re selling everything we make’.

Flush with confidence Cook is now predicting Apple will sell more products during the three months to January than in 2010 in its entirety.

Not all is verdant in Apple’s garden however with iPad sales beginning to wither in the face of growing competition, the company sold just 12.3m iPads in the three months to October –down from 14.1m in the same period last year.
