Two British drug mules languishing in a Peruvian jail are to star in a multi-million pound advert warning other young people to heed their fate and resist the temptation to illegally boost their holiday money whilst abroad.

Melissa Reid and Michaela McCollum are both serving seven year term’s after being collared at Lima Airport with £1.5m of cocaine in their luggage.

This followed a holiday on the island of Ibiza where they agreed to participate in the operation after being paid and flown out to South America by a criminal gang.

Their subsequent arrest made headlines back home and has now prompted the Foreign Office to warn other would-be smugglers that the risks are not worth it.

Billy Reid, Melissa’s father, told the Daily Record: “I don’t want anyone else to get embroiled in what Melissa got embroiled in – the implications are huge. When you are on holiday your guard is down and you are more vulnerable than when you are with friends on home turf.”

Posters and accompanying social media messages will begin appearing next month to urge ‘opportunist drugs smugglers’ to think twice.
