A family grieving for a deceased grandmother have been angered by their mobile phone company after it sold off her mobile number to another firm.

As part of the grieving process the family had buried her mobile phone alongside her to allow them to continue to communicate through text messages, but received a fright when a reply apparently emanated from six feet under.

The message from beyond the grave lodged itself in the inbox granddaughter Sheri Emerson who received the message: “I’m watching over you. You’ll get through this. You’ll be all right.”

A follow-up call shattered any illusions that Heaven might have a cell phone connection however when a decidedly Earthbound man responded that he had been using the number for several weeks.

Sheri’s father, John, said he had offered to pay mobile operator O2 to retain the number but rather than disconnect it was subsequently sold on to giffgaff – hence the confusion.

A spokesperson for O2 said they were now trying to retrieve the number, saying: “We’ve been in touch with giffgaff and they have left their customer messages on email. At the moment it’s a waiting game until he gets back in touch.”
