A missing woman who crashed her car off a 500-foot ravine was located and saved by police after they used the Find My iPhone app to pinpoint her exact whereabouts.

Police guessed the password in four tries

The 28-year-old Californian woman first appeared on the police’s radar after her Chevy Cruze issued a distress call following the crash but she remained missing, according to the LA Times.

The following morning, the woman’s stepmother issued a missing person’s report. As a result, police accessed her computer where they correctly guessed her Find My iPhone password after only four tries.

Using the app, which tracks the exact location of the phone using carrier towers, WiFi connections and GPS systems in the event of a lost or stolen mobile, the officers found the woman, injured at the bottom of the cliff, following a devastating drop.

The US Coast Guard then airlifted to hospital where she is now being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Gary Berg, captain of Campbell police service, told the LA Times: "I am amazed that occurred. I hate to think what the outcome would have been.”

Although an Apple product saved the woman in this instance, GPS technology can also be a hinderance for the inexperienced criminal.

In August a man from Florida was sent to prison after it emerged he asked Siri where the best place to hide a body was on the same evening his flatmate disappeared
