Samsung has allegedly perfected a new form of wireless technology which could increase WiFi data transferal speeds by up to 500 per cent, a breakthrough it will use in forthcoming internet of things products.

Samsung will power the Internet of Things with the new WiFi channel

The Korean firm has announced that it has solved two set-backs stopping it from releasing WiFi operating on the 60GHz spectrum. As a result, the new data transferal channel could see a 1GB movie moved wirelessly between devices in under three seconds. The technology will also pave the way for seamless TV streaming.

Previously, signals sent on the 60GHz spectrum displayed poor penetration abilities and were susceptible to breaking up, resulting in inferior performance.

Kim Chang Yong, head of Samsung’s DMC research and development centre, said: “Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology.

“New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”

Samsung claimed it will use the faster WiFi technology in its SmartHome and Internet of Things products in future.

The firm in August invested $200m in SmartThing, an internet of things start-up, in a bid to increase its stake in home control technologies.
