Google has taken the next step in the evolution of its Streetview mission by recruiting a camel to lug its 360 degree camera around the Lima Desert in the United Arab Emirates.

The unconventional transport was chosen for the mapping mission as the best means of documenting the rolling sand dunes, oasis and other travellers for the short publicity shoot on the Arabian peninsula.

Google spokesperson Joyce Baz explained: “With every environment and every location, we try to customise the capture and how we do it for that part of the environment.

“In the case of Liwa we fashioned it in a way so that it [the Trekker camera] goes on a camel so that it can capture imagery in the best, most authentic and least damaging way.”

Various Google vehicles to be utilised in recent years including river boats, tricycles and the backs of its own staff.

These PR drives follow efforts to map exotic locales including the Amazon rainforest, Grand Canyon and Pacific Ocean.
