Ads will start to appear on Snapchat “soon”, co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel has said.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Snapchat was set to launch new service Snapchat Discovery in November, which would allow users to read articles, watch TV show clips and see adverts.

Revealing more information while speaking at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit, Spiegel said the ads will not be targeted to individual users based on their tastes.

“We’re cutting through a lot of the new technology stuff around ads to sort of the core of it, which I think has always been telling a story that leaves people with a new feeling,” Spiegel said. “They’re not fancy. You just look at it if you want to look at it, and you don’t if you don’t.”

Some brands already use Snapchat for promotion, including Betfair, the Co-Operative and Evian. The Drum caught up with these brands earlier this year to discuss their views on the official launch of advertising on the channel.

This will be the first attempt at raising revenue from Snapchat, with Yahoo said to be investing £20m in the platform.

The latest print edition of The Drum asked a selection of ‘creative rabble-rousers and deviants’ their opinion on how to advertising on channels such as Snapchat and Tinder.
