EE is to become Britain’s first mobile phone firm to offer its own TV service with the launch of its own set top box in London later today.

The firm, which incorporates both the Orange and T-Mobile brands, is keen to tread on the toes of providers such as BT and Sky by providing the full gamut of home entertainment services including mobile, landline, broadband and TV packages.

The new box will have the ability to record TV for later viewing on phone or tablet via EE’s mobile network and will enable viewers to plug in up to four separate devices to watch simultaneous live broadcasts.

Available content will include Freeview, BBC iPlayer and Channel 5’s catch-up service – although Sky’s Now TV and BT Sport are notable by their absence.

Some 800,000 existing customers will be given the system for free although those on the cheapest broadband packages will not be able to receive TV
