Rakuten has launched a card service for customers of its Super Points loyalty programme, allowing them to spend their points offline in physical stores throughout Japan via its R-Point Card service.

The move extends the redemption opportunities from 42,000 stores on the Rakuten Ichiba online shopping mall to 12,600 bricks and mortar retailers such as Mister Donuts and Washo Fish Market.

Using the Rakuten Card credit card or a free iOS and Android app customers can enjoy savings direct at the till

In a statement Rakuten said: “Rakuten will offer a free R-Point Card app for iOS and Android which can display the membership card barcode to allow members to use their R-Point Card via their smartphone, rather than having to carry their card (pending app approval). Rakuten is also planning to offer the R-Point Card service to individual retailers using point-of-sale terminals next spring.”
