Apple is hoping to give a shot in the arm to flagging desktop computer sales with the release of a new range of Ultra HD ‘Retina’ display iMacs.

The top of the range devices are expected to be launched alongside a new range of iPads next month, which will sport a slimmer design and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

According to 9to5 Mac, which cites sources familiar with the device, the new models will be superficially similar to existing models – but with souped up innards.

The site said: “While the machine will sport a thin profile similar to that of the current design, which was introduced in 2012, it will be packed with new internals such as faster processors and improved WiFi antennas.”

Apple is also expected to unveil a fresh iteration of its Mac software to run on the computers, dubbed Yosemite. It is the first software to be designed by Apple supremo Sir Jinathan Ive and will allow users to make and receive calls and notifications from their desktop and search the web without opening Safari.
