Online auction house eBay is battling to maintain consumer confidence in its systems after its website was forced offline for the second time in a month.

The latest crash saw merchants and consumers unable to log-in to their accounts for more than five hours, rendering them unable to buy or sell items for the duration of the outage.

Chaos inevitably ensued as irate customers battled through a seven hour queue to be heard by eBay’s overwhelmed customer service team.

Exasperated customers were forced onto Twitter instead to vent their frustrations at the poor quality of service:

eBay finally rectified the issue in the early hours of this morning with a tweeted apology to anyone put out by the mess.

In a separate development eBay has denied rumours that search giant Google is poised to make an investment in the firm by stating that no such discussions have taken place.
