Guardian News & Media has hired Google’s David Gehring for a VP of partnerships role in San Francisco.

Appointment: David Gehring

The move marks GNM’s intentions, first announced in July, to increase its commercial presence in the US, and will give the publisher a presence outside of New York. The company has hired Gehring from his role leading global alliances and partnerships in the media sector at Google.

Tony Danker, international and partnership director at Guardian News & Media, said: “We’re delighted to welcome David to the Guardian family.

“He brings a deep knowledge of Silicon Valley, as well as long experience in developing partnerships of real commercial value to journalism and other content companies.

“His appointment, as part of our deepening presence on the west coast, is yet another important step in our continued development as one of the world’s leading digital news organisations.”

The Guardian US is pulling in 23 million unique users for the publisher, and revenues have doubled in the last year. In total over the last year, it has grown global traffic by almost a quarter (24 per cent) to 105 million monthly unique browsers, and overall digital revenue is up by 25 per cent to £70m.
