A browser extension has been launched which promises to assist travellers in avoiding hotels with lousy Wi-Fi speeds, by displaying an estimated clock speed at the time of booking.

Hotel Wi-Fi Test is compatible with the Chrome and Firefox web browsers, displaying a read out of the expected broadband speed, and the percentage confidence that this will be obtained, before choosing a hotel on Hotels.com, Expedia.com, Booking.com and TripAdvisor.

What’s more users can also filter search results by connection speed if Wi-Fi is the most important consideration when booking, for a business trip say.

In a statement the plug-in providers said: “The Wi-Fi information block respects the style of each site, so it feels like a native element on the page.

“The browser extension also provides a quick way to compare the Wi-Fi speed of tested hotels within a particular city. With almost 200 hotels tested in New York alone, this is a powerful tool for travelers who value fast and reliable Wi-Fi."
