Golfing champ Rory McIlroy faces being banned from tweeting selfies from the green during the Ryder Cup after organiser of next month’s Gleneagles event imposed a bar on uploading photographs to social media during the event.

McIlroy famously tweeted a viral ‘selfie’of himself holding his trophy aloft to 2m Twitter followers after winning the Open at Hoylake in July.

A repeat of the stunt now looks unlikely however as authorities take a dim view of such theatrics, with the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) and PGA European Tour both banning the dissemination of audio or video footage during the 6-day event.

Shoul McIlroy opt to flout the regulations however he won’t be censured too greatly, anyone breaking the rules can expect no greater chastisement than having their mobile or camera confiscated for the day.

Commenting on the planned policy Prof Sarah Pedersen, a social media expert at Robert Gordin university, said: “It is something we will see an increase in. There are all sorts of reasons behind this, to do with sponsorship.

“If you have got people there with mobile phones instantly uploading things to the internet then of course you have no control over what sort of image is being presented of your event.”
