Aldi will ban all confectionary, including chocolate and sweets from its checkout points from January 2015, in a move that mirrors that of rival Tesco.

Tesco agreed to remove confectionary from the tills across all of its stores in May this year after it found 65 per cent of shoppers wanted healthier choices put in the prime-selling spot instead.

Aldi trialled ‘healthier tills’ in a select number of stores from February to June this year, with Giles Hurley, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, explaining that healthier foods prove more popular with their shoppers than the traditional checkout offer of confectionery and sweets.

“Aldi takes a customer-focused approach, which involves helping our shoppers to lead healthier lifestyles. We are now pleased to be able to roll-out healthier tills as part of this,” added Hurley.

Moving forward, only non-confectionery products that meet the UK's Ofcom health criteria will be stocked at Aldi tills.

This latest move comes after Aldi voluntarily committed to incorporate colour coding (traffic lights) to its packaging.

In July this year, Aldi was voted the nation’s favourite brand in a YouGov survey.
