Waitrose implements 7-year-old boy's brown sauce label rebrand nationwide

Waitrose has implemented a brown sauce bottle design, created by a seven-year old boy who complained that the previous branding was unclear and drab.

Harry Deverill contacted Waitrose saying that the brown sauce bottle had a confusing design and enclosed one of his drawings for the brown sauce bottle – showing a full-English breakfast.

The letter said: “Dear Mark Price,

“I am writing as the other morning I had Waitrose Essential Brown Sauce with my bacon sandwiches. I asked Daddy what the picture is of on the label. Daddy didn't know and neither do I. Please could you let me know. Mummy says I am good at drawing so if you would like me to draw a new picture for the label I would be happy to.”

His mother Helen Deverill, 38, said the boy was encouraged by his father to get in touch with the retailer, armed with his idea. “He was really surprised and really excited as he was only six at the time, he spent almost a week perfecting his design, he drew three suggestions one with a picture of a bacon sandwich, another with a picture of fried eggs on toast and another with a fried breakfast.

“Now the label is on the shelf, it looks great and I think Waitrose have really done themselves proud. It proves they listen to their customers no matter how young they are.”

The special edition brown-sauce bottles will be available in Waitrose shops nationwide for £1.20.

This comes after Sainsbury's in 2012 changed their packaging in response to a handwritten letter from three year-old Lily Robinson, who complained that tiger bread should be called giraffe bread because it is spotted and not striped.
