Peter Capaldi’s debut episode as The Doctor drew nearly 135,000 tweets during the 80-minute period that Doctor Who aired in the UK.

However, the first episode of series eight of Doctor Who - Deep Breath - which was the first to feature Capaldi in the role, failed to draw even half the number of tweets sent during his live reveal last August.

During the special live programme, which announced Capaldi’s casting as Matt Smith’s successor, Twitter generated 542,531 tweets.

During the first episode featuring Capaldi, 134,990 tweets were sent, peaking 3,338 tweets per minute during the first half an hour.

The average tweets sent per minute during the episode were 950.

The overnight viewing figures for the episode were 6.8 million.

Earlier this week, the BBC released a YouTube takeover which would allow users the opportunity to pilot the Tardis.
