Apple suffered a blow after a backlight component flaw was found in new iPhone 6 screens, in a blunder which delayed the phone's production until redesigned components were manufactured, according to Reuters.

Production of the iPhone 6, images of which were on Thursday reportedly leaked to the public, suffered setbacks after screen illumination components were found to perform poorly.

The error, which delayed phone assembly through June and July, could result in substantially fewer units being produced before the iPhone 6's release later this year.

The screen flaw arose after Apple, wanting the thinnest phone possible, cut back a single layer of backlight film, which resulted in a dimly-lit display.

Apple will debut the 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch iPhone 6s smartphones at Cupertino in the US on 9 September.

The iPhone 6's screen has already been mocked in a recent Samsung ad called 'Screen Envy', as the Korean firm pointed out the Galaxy S4 already has a 5.5 inch display.

A spokesman for Pegatron, a third-party iPhone assembly company, said: "Currently, there's a small shortage in supply of a specialised component for our communication devices.

"This kind of problem regularly occurs and the impact on production is negligible."

This comes after Apple banned two hazardous agents, including a carcinogen, from 22 of its iPhone and iPad production sites, the vast majority of which are based in China, last week.
