The opening weekend of the 2014/15 #PremierLeague season has set Twitter alight with 5.5m tweets mentioning matches over the period, with Manchester United dominating the majority of conversations – albeit for all the wrong reasons.

Highlights from the weekend include Manchester United’s square off against Swansea which was the most-discussed match of the period with 1m tweets, with the Reds cementing their dominance by claiming two of the three most discussed Twitter moments.

These were the full-time whistle as Manchester United went down 2-1 to Swansea, which generated 32k tweets per minute; Arsenal taking a 2-1 lead when Aaron Ramsey notched up an injury-time goal (28k tweets per minute) and Wayne Rooney scoring an equaliser for United to take it to one all in their Swansea match, which clocked up 21k tweets per minute.

Manchester United added to their Twitter tally after their manager, Louis van Gaal, claimed the most discussed person on Twitter accolade.

In all the top three most mentioned players over the period were Aaron Ramsey (@aaronramsey), Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) and Ashley Young (@youngy18) – the latter after apparently being hit by some stray guano whilst on the pitch.
