Incoming Time Lord Peter Capaldi has been given an all-new title sequence to herald his arrival on BBC 1 later this month, as befits a new Doctor, but this time things are different with producers taking inspiration from a professionally produced fan clip hosted on YouTube.

Devised by Dr Who fan Billy Hanshaw, whose day job includes building graphics for TV commercials, the time focussed piece features a number of ticking representations of the universe in flux.

One of the 700k plus people to view the clip was series producer Steven Moffat who duly commissioned Hanshaw to work with BBC Wales to craft the new piece.

Commenting on the piece Moffat said: “Hanshaw created this title sequence, put it up on YouTube. I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I’d seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, okay, we’re going to do that one.”

Fans will be able to lock eyes on the real thing when it airs for the first time on 23 August.
