British vehicle brand Jaguar is facing a major crisis PR operation in the US after it was forced to recall 40,000 cars following the discovery of a fault in the front passenger airbag of models dating back to 2010.

The flaw is believed serious enough to prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of a collision and is present on 17,066 LR2 luxury compact SUVs and 23,485 Range Rover Evoque SUVs sold in America.

Software controlling the release mechanism are said to be prone to failure, impacting on the effectiveness of the safety feature,

Although there have been no reports of any accidents or injuries arising from the fault Land Rover will update affected systems free of charge from the end of the month.

The affair is likely to prove damaging to the Jaguar Land Rover brand however, following hot on the heels of a similar recall of 1,500 diesel Range Rover Sport cars in the UK last October over defective dynamic response systems.

Range Rover has not yet commented on whether the latest scare will be enlarged to encompass additional markets.
