Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry is to invest in excess of £1m to launch a new music service with 7digital for its struggling platform.

The tie-up comes just two months after the struggling mobile phone firm axed its music and video app section of BlackBerry World in favour of a licensing deal with Amazon.

Now 7digital will work with BlackBerry on an alternative music service through to August 2015 whilst also assuming full responsibility for all sales, ensuring it can retain all profits arising from purchases without needing to share with BlackBerry.

Simon Cole, chief executive of 7digital said: “We are pleased to have agreed new terms with BlackBerry to provide its users with access to music. This arrangement ensures both the continuation of our relationship with BlackBerry and our ability to sell music to its users.”
