Asda has reported a 0.5 per cent increase in sales and has seen its online market share grow to 18.4 per cent according to its second quarter results, announced today.

Asda president and CEO Andy Clarke said the retailer is “making good progress on its ambition to lead online” driven predominantly by the click and collect service which now accounts for 10 per cent of all online orders and is used by more than 20,000 Asda customers per week.

Announcing the results, which cover the 10 weeks to June 30, the supermarket boss predicted that in the next five years click and collect orders will treble with 30 per cent of all orders expected to be collected in Asda stores.

Clarke said the results show Asda is “well positioned to meet the demands of a challenging market”.

“However, I’ve been in this business for too long to measure success by quarters and we remain on a long term journey. Innovation, low prices and customer service remain at the heart of our business and over the coming months and years we will continue to implement and build on this successful strategy as we constantly look at new and improved ways to run our business.”

Asda has been trialing new advertising formats on its website recently which are inspired by Facebook posts which have driven the greatest levels of engagement. Users are asked to pick a favourite product out of four and have the option to add it to their online basket directly from the advert.

The supermarket giant inked deals with P&G, Unilever, and Pepsico to use to the format between now and January 2015.
