Ex-News of the World editor Andy Coulson is still languishing in a maximum security prison nearly six weeks after being convicted of phone hacking, despite pleas from his own judge recommending that he be moved to an open jail.

Coulson was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for his part in the privacy scandal but his lawyers have argued that his detention in Belmarsh, south east London, is disproportionate to any possible security threats he might pose.

The judge who sentenced him has previously written to the governor recommending he be moved but as Coulson has still not yet been categorised by the authorities he remains stuck in limbo and cannot be relocated.

Coulson’s heavy-handed treatment stands in stark contrast to that meted out to paedophile entertainer Rolf Harris, who was coincidentally sentenced on the same day. Harris has already been moved to a category C prison close to his Berkshire home.

Meanwhile Coulson must rub shoulders with the Soho nail bomber David Copeland and numerous Islamic extremists.
