People on the move: hires and departures at Buzzfeed, AOL, Snapchat, Google and more

This week has seen another wave of appointments and departures at brands, media owners and agencies. The Drum has rounded up the key hires below.

Buzzfeed's new president Greg Coleman

Buzzfeed

BuzzFeed has named Greg Coleman as its incoming president to manage growth in the social news and entertainment websites sales, creative services, marketing, ad products and business development.

Snapchat

Snapchat’s high profile VP of engineering, Peter Magnusson, has abruptly quit the messaging app just six months after being poached from Google in unclear circumstances.

At Snapchat Magnusson saw his role as a long-term one, initially stating his intent to: “over time develop more infrastructure ourselves, in particular in specialized areas of our apps.”

AOL

AOL UK has hired Microsoft Advertising’s senior director of multinational sales, Penny Harris, as international head of revenue.

A statement from AOL said Harris will have a “particular focus on programmatic trading” in the newly created role.

Google

Dan Cobley, who was promoted to VP brand solutions in May this year, is to leave Google at the end of August to start his own venture.

Cobley has spent the past eight and a half years at Google in a variety of roles. He joined as UK marketing director in 2006 before being named VP of marketing for Europe and later managing director in the UK.

Apple

Following the closure of graphic design consultancy Glad founder Dave Burdon has moved to San Francisco to join Apple as a senior art designer.

A post on Glad’s LinkedIn page attributes the closure to the team “pursuing new and exciting opportunities that include new roles in the States and London”.

Channel 4

Channel 4 Sales has appointed Adrian English to one of two new group investment lead roles created to support Ed Chalmers, head of trading, to maximise traded revenues across the Channel 4 Saleshouse.

Reporting Chalmers, English will develop Channel 4 Sales’ trading and commercial strategy and lead a fully integrated trading team in negotiations, with the aim of building strong commercial relationships and continuing to deliver upon a strong track record of innovative and integrated trading solutions.

English previously head of media investment and a board director at Carat.

Bauer Media

Bauer Media has named Sam Jones, formerly of Perform Group, Warner Group and LoveLive, as managing director, digital.

Prior to joining Bauer, Jones was group director of sports media company Perform Group, and before that chief operating officer and co-founder of music branded content and distribution company LoveLive.

The Gate

Dave Trott, chairman of the Gate, revealed he is to step down from his role this November. He has been at the agency since it was formed in 2010, when The Gate's Media Square parent acquired CST - of which Trott was a co-founder, from Cagney.

Havas Worldwide

Havas Worldwide London has promoted Lucy Powell to the role of head of film following Leila Bartlam's departure for Iris.

Powell, who has been a TV producer at Havas Worldwide London since 2013, joined the agency from JWT where worked in the same role.

BBH

BBH group chief executive Gwyn Jones is to leave the agency after 27 years, stepping down at the end of the year to pursue other interests out with the world of advertising.

Jones has spent his entire career with BBH moving up the ranks from graduate trainee to UK chief executive. During his time with BBH Jones had a spell running BBH New York before returning to the UK to take on the role of chief operating officer and chief executive of the group.

Jaywing

Jaywing has appointed Darren Navier as creative head, where he will be responsible for leading creative concepts and delivery, with a particular cross-platform and user experience focus.

Joining from Bloom, where he was creative director, Navier has previously worked with brands including LA Fitness, Emirates, ADT and Anglian Home Improvements.

Kitcatt Nohr

Kitcatt Nohr has promoted current new business and PR lead Steve Garside to head of new business and marketing, as current chief marketing officer Tracey Barber returns to Havas EHS in the same positon.

HomeAway

Online holiday rental site HomeAway has hired former Visa Europe chief marketing officer Mariano Dima to the same role as it looks to launch a new global marketing push.

Dima, who previously worked at Vodafone, Levi Strauss & Co and PepsiCo, has been tasked with overseeing all global marketing, corporate communications and brand initiatives and teams for the group.

Bloom Worldwide

Insight-driven digital agency Bloom Worldwide has appointed former Kitcatt Nohr account director Alex Cootes as group account director.

Cootes, who previously served as account director at Sapient Nitro, will be responsible for leading Bloom’s key accounts and strengthening the agency’s commercial and client services offerings.

Iris

Havas Worldwide's Leila Bartlam has joined Iris in the role of head of TV, film and content.

Bartlam will oversee all TV, film and content production, heading up a 30 plus strong content team at the creative innovation network's London office, and working with clients including adidas, Britvic, Domino's, MINI and Barclaycard.

Leila will report into CEO London Dan Saxby and executive creative director Chris Baylis.

Manifest Communications

Leeds based marketing communications agency Manifest, has expanded its team with the appointment of Paul Cowan as designer and traffic manager. The company has also promoted Amy Airey from PR account director to PR director.
