Pinterest has expanded its features with an update designed to improve the site's friend-interaction capabilities.

The social network, which categorises interesting topics for users to 'pin' to their own personal board like a website bookmark, has rolled out a messages update, which lets users chat to each other about interesting pins they find on their tablet and mobile devices.

With over 70 million users, the site recently overtook Facebook's revenue per visit due to its promoted pins driving retail sales.

A Pinterest spokesperson said: "Every day, people send more than two million pins, using it as a great way to let someone know you found something they’d love.

"[We] wanted to make it easier for pinners to have a good old fashioned conversation about those pins, so now when someone sends a pin, you can reply with a message and even send a pin back."

A Pinterest blog said it was important to be able to respond to received pins - either as an individual, or as a group, in order to makes plans for fun trips, restaurant bookings and parties.

"If you need a reminder of who’s bringing what, just pull up the conversation right from your notifications," a Pinterest spokesperson added.

The site, which has an 80 per cent female user base, was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp.
