Aldi has launched its first own-brand smartphone in its latest move to stand up against the likes of Tesco.

The budget retailer’s Android handset – manufactured by Medion – will be available from tomorrow, 7 August, and will retail at just £79.99 (SIM-free).

Many have already critiqued the limited specs which include a 4-inch, 480 x 800, display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 4GB internal storage and a 2MP camera.

It comes after the supermarket chain launched its own tablet - the Medion Lifetab E7316 - similarly priced at £79.99, earlier this year.

In May, rival retailer Tesco confirmed it would be making its first foray into the smartphone market. It's offering is set to launch in the coming months.

Aldi was recently voted the UK’s favourite brand for the first time in the YouGov BrandIndex’s 2014 mid-year Buzz rankings.
