The Scottish Criminal Case Review Commission has agreed to review Tommy Sheridan's conviction for perjury in the wake of the phone-hacking trial.

Case: Tommy Sheridan

The Scottish politician, who was convicted for perjury over the testimony he gave in a libel case against the now defunct News of the World, said he was "very pleased" with the decision and was "absolutely confident" the court's verdict would be reversed.

Sheridan's trial in 2010 featured evidence from a number of witnesses including former News of the World editor Andy Coulson.

Coulson, who is serving an 18 month sentence for conspiracy to illegally intercept communications, is due in court in Glasgow tomorrow to answer charges of giving false evidence against the Scottish socialist politician while another News of the World employee, Douglas Wight, is also accused of committing perjury during the case.

Speaking to the Drum, Sheridan's solictor Gordon Dangerfield called his client's conviction a "shocking miscarrige of justice" and said he was confident it would be overturned.

Sheridan added that he expected his name would be cleared, saying: "The criminal News of the World shamed the profession of journalism and was rightfully closed down. I will continue to fight the lies and distortions of the powerful gutter press with truth."

Sheridan's case will now be examined by a senior legal officer who will decide if a full appeal hearing should be heard. A decision is expected early next year.
