The BBC has been forced to deny that it is run by ‘media studies twerps’ after the colourful accusation was levelled at it by opera director and comedian Sir Jonathan Miller.

The respected cultural figure lashed out at the broadcaster for its penchant for incomprehensible buzzwords and hyperbole to the exclusion of creativity. Miller claimed that this is because the BBC is now run by “twerps who all have degrees in Media Studies, which is like having a degree in stationery”.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday Miller revealed his own difficulty in having his ideas commissioned following a dry spell stretching back to 2004, lamenting that previously he could just ‘go upstairs’ and tell management what he would like to do.

“Now you go to a person called a commissioning editor, who says, ‘You haven't described the journey.’ I don't have the faintest f------ idea what they mean,” laments Miller.

Miller, who has previously called for a return to ‘thoughtful programming,’ is currently attempting to pitch an extended factual programme investigating the background to ‘phantom limb’ phenomena.

A spokesman for the BBC said: "This is not a description of the BBC we recognise.”
