Facebook has apologised after it faced its second major outage in the space of two months after it crashed on Friday (1 August) for a brief period.

The site went down from 4pm for less two hours globally, with users receiving an error message stating “the requested URL could not be retrieved”.

During the site’s downtime, Facebook stated “We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

The site has yet to explain the problem but did state once rectified that; "Traffic and error-rates are almost back to normal after a coordinated intervention by our engineering teams.

"We are now monitoring the situation and we have our best engineers determining the root-cause of this issue that affected much of our web fleet. We apologise for any inconvenience and we aim to ensure that this issue does not repeat."

In June, the site also crashed for a period of over half-an-hour.
