Businesses must fundamentally embrace the values and contributions of both genders to get the best out of workplaces, according to She Says director Emma Sexton.

Speaking at The Drum Live after the Evolve or Die session, Sexton said business cultures had been traditionally created by men based on “male values” and there needs to be a shift in thinking.

“I was talking [at The Drum Live session] about a real step change in business culture, how business culture’s been created by men on male values and how do we get a more hetero culture where we have the best of feminine and the best of male values, so it’s taking gender out and putting values in.

“I think it’s now how we can incorporate the best of feminine values, which is more about creating utopia, creating an environment that works for everybody, not just for that business… how we just have a better working environment for men and women rather than a very male values-heavy working culture.”

During the panel, the Guardian’s head of Women in Leadership, Harriet Minter, said businesses must embrace flexible working for men and women in order to survive.
