Eighties action homage movie ‘The Expendables 3’ has been leaked to torrent websites and downloaded almost a quarter of a million times, three weeks ahead of its release on 15 August.

The movie boasts Holywood's best action stars

Since the leak, a high-quality copy of the movie has been circulated on the net in a mishap which will likely hit the movie’s box office takings.

The file was first leaked on Thursday to torrent sites such as Pirate Bay, which has now extended to mobile. A BitTorrent account called ‘Drarbg’, which is responsible for providing links to tens of TV shows and movies a day, was the first uploader of the content.

There will likely be a legal backlash as in 2010, Nu Image, the producer of the Expendables, filed a copyright lawsuit against 22,000 individuals who he alleged downloaded the first movie.

The action blockbuster, to be released by Lionsgate, which is yet to comment, was previously projected to take $24m at the box office in its opening weekend.

The ‘Expendables’ grossed $275m worldwide in 2010. Its sequel managed $300m in 2012.

The third movie in the series will see a large cast of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren and more.
