London mayor Boris Johnson has pledged to give all Londoners access to sub-second film downloads on their mobile phones by 2020, as the fruits of efforts to usher in the world’s first ‘5G’ mobile network.

The ambitious technical milestone for the capital is being pushed as part of efforts to position the city as the tech capital of Europe and constitutes a key plank in the mayor’s long-term capital investment drive.

When built in six years’ time the speedy network will allow smartphone users to access data in intervals measured in milliseconds, cementing its reputation for digital connectivity.

Johnson said: “London is earning a reputation for being the tech capital of Europe and that is why we need to ensure every Londoner is able to access the very best digital connectivity.”
