A teenage girl has been given a criminal record after ‘sexting’ an explicit selfie to her boyfriend, as police warn children as young as 10 could end up on the sex offenders register for exchanging such material.

Police were called after the boy distributed the image to his friends when the pair fell out, leading to both individuals receiving a police caution for distributing indecent images of a child, as the girl was below the age of 18.

The case has sparked a wider warning of the dangers posed by the craze with Nottinghamshire Police issuing letters to all schools in the county to express its ‘grave concerns’ over the practice.

Detective Sergeant Jan Rusdale said of children who sext: “They could end up on the register for a couple of years. When they come to getting a job this would then count against them.

“We just want to get the message out there that this is a very serious offence. We need parents and children to realise this."
