A Conservative peer has called for the publication of so-called ‘revenge porn’ to be criminalised amidst concern that hundreds of spurned men are making unwitting ‘porn stars’ of their former lovers.

Those affected by the practice currently face a bureaucratic battle to get such imagery taken down with some unscrupulous American websites demanding hundreds of dollars to remove intimate photos.

Speaking during a House of Lords debate on the issue Baroness Morris of Bolton said victims faced ‘extraordinary difficulty’ in erasing such material with some having ‘to pay so-called fees of hundreds of dollars to host websites in the United States.’

In response Morris is calling for such activity to be criminalised in order to provide the necessary impetus for internet service providers and search engines to remove the material, saying: “The law needs to set out clear boundaries about what is and is not acceptable behaviour, including sexual behaviour.”

Baroness Berridge of the Vale of Catmose added: “Victims have described that they feel they have become a porn star without their knowledge or consent. And there are devastating impacts on employment prospects as well as reputation.”
