ESI Media has launched a ‘pioneering’ news and comment platform, designed to let users ‘upvote’ articles in a top 100 list.

The i100 site combines brand qualities of the i newspaper and sister title The Independent and includes new editorial formats including quizzes, interactive graphics and maps with authoritative reporting and opinion.

Users of i100 can rank posts via ‘upvoting' buttons to affect the order of stories in ‘The List’ – giving the audience the ability to set the news agenda.

Content is created especially for i100 by a dedicated content team, but also draws on the broader, editorial team of The Independent news site as well as the i newspaper, with stories ‘substantially adapted’ to make them fit the new editorial style.

i100 features both native and display advertising, and launches in partnership with online banking brand First Direct.

The creation of i100 has been led by the digital editor of The Independent/i, Christian Broughton, who commented: “This was a unique opportunity to deliver authoritative news using a new way to read, share, suggest and vote on stories. The result is a site that makes the most of the very best of social media.

“i100 builds on the thriving i newspaper brand, providing news and comment in a way that makes you want to engage. It can great fun, but it can also be extremely powerful - this is about proper news. Accurate, independent, intelligent, witty, high-quality journalism is in i100’s soul.”

The new site has been designed to be consumed on mobiles, tablets and desktops, which ESI Media said would take the brand 'into new territory' for audience growth, user data and social-media engagement.
