A new internet domain for Scotland has been launched today with around 50 sites expected to go live with the .scot suffix for web and email addresses.

Amongst those to make use of the new domain are the Scottish government, Yes Scotland and Better Together representing both camps in the independence debate, WWF Scotland, NHS Scotland and Scouts Scotland.

.Scot is just one of a multitude of new top level domains to be released including the likes of .wales, .london and .NYC, after the Dot Scot Registry agreed terms with international regulators to clear the way for the new address.

Commenting on the launch deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "It is entirely right that Scotland should have its own distinctive and recognisable internet domain - in particular, one that will resonate internationally, helping to promote Scottish business and culture throughout the world.

"I am confident that the .scot domain name will prove to be a real asset to the people of Scotland and to the worldwide family of Scots.

Only ‘launch pioneers’will be entitled to utilise the domain for a period of 60 days with the domain becoming open to all from 23 September.
