The Daily Mail has apologised to George Clooney after publishing an ‘inaccurate’ article alleging that his future mother in law objected to his upcoming marriage to Amal Alamuddin on religious grounds.

The piece claimed that Alamuddin’s mum had objected to her tying the knot, suggesting that she ‘could do better’ by marrying someone from within the Druze religious sect – prompting Clooney to accuse the Mail of ‘irresponsibility’ whilst rebutting all of its claims.

In a statement the Mail Online said: “We accept Mr Clooney's assurance that the story is inaccurate," said a statement from the Mail Online.

"We have removed the article from our website and will be contacting Mr Clooney's representatives to discuss giving him the opportunity to set the record straight."

This was in response to a counter argument penned by Clooney for USA Today, which said: “The irresponsibility, in this day and age, to exploit religious differences where none exist, is at the very least negligent and more appropriately dangerous.”

The article, first posted by the Mail Online on Monday and subsequently printed in Tuesday’s edition of the paper, has since been removed.
