Hotpoint is facing bad PR after recalling hundreds of thousands of dishwashers manufactured between 2008 and 2010 after it emerged there have been 18 fire incidents caused by an electrical fault in the product.

Customers who registered their purchase will receive a letter to ensure faulty products are recalled, however those who did not register are at risk of not finding out whether their product is dangerous.

A spokesperson said: “Indesit continually monitors the specification and performance of its products. W have identified that there is a low risk that a component fitted to a limited number of Hotpoint and Indesit dishwashers manufactured predominantly between January 2008 and July 2010 sold in the UK may cause overheating and in rare cases a potential fire hazard."

According to a London Business School’s professor of marketing, who spoke to The Drum about product recall management, the challenge is not to allow a product recall to threaten the entire brand or company.

He said that "product recalls need not turn into a brand crisis. They can even be an opportunity to build the brand, provided they are handled appropriately,” meaning that this may not be a major blow to Hotpoint.
