No new laws needed for social media, barrister tells Lords communication committee

No new laws are needed to deal with social media, just new understanding of existing laws, John Cooper QC told the Lords communication committee.

Cooper said that stalking, threats to kill, sending obscene material and harassment were "age old" offences, already covered by law, so the medium did not make a difference.

In 2010 Cooper represented a man put on trial for posting a joke bomb threat about an airport on Twitter.

He added: "The issue for me is not not so much the faulty nature of the existing law but the fact it's coming at us from all angles."

This comes as the government plan harsher punishment for ‘revenge porn'.
