Harriet Harman, Labour’s shadow culture, media and sport secretary, has pledged that the party will aim to improve the way the government works with the advertising industry.

Speaking ahead of making a speech at the annual ISBA lunch, Harman described the advertising industry as an £18bn British success story.

The party has promised to support the industry, which it claimed generates £6 to the economy for each pound spent and employs around half a million people in some capacity.

It also claimed that it would ‘work through current structures’, in particular the Advertising Standards Authority, take an evidence-based approach to regulation and work across government departments on issues which affect the industry, as well as in consultation with it.

“Advertising is a British success story, both as an important and creative industry, but also in the work that it does to promote price competition at home and promote British exports overseas,” stated Harman.

“Advertising is powerful and it must also be responsible. And this applies as new ways of engaging with the public are developed.

“Our policy on advertising will be based on sound evidence and developed through close working with industry.”

Harman will speak at the ISBA lunch which will take place tomorrow (1 July) at The Dorchester in Mayfair.
