Scotland Yard has formally notified Rupert Murdoch of their desire to quiz him as a suspect as part of their ongoing enquiry into alleged criminality at his UK newspaper operations.

Detectives agreed to hang fire until the end of the phone hacking trial but with that now reaching its conclusion investigators are once again turning their attentions to the Australian media mogul.

Murdoch is set to be interviewed under caution in the UK soon with his son, James, also rumoured to be facing a grilling.

This follows the conviction of former News of the World editor Andy Coulson of conspiring to hack phones, paving the way for further criminal trials of journalists and a slew of compensation demands from victims.

News UK, Murdoch’s publishing arm, could also be charged as a corporation – exposing its directors, including members of the Murdoch clan, to further potential legal action.
