Apple is set to go wrist to wrist with Google and Samsung in a race to develop a new range of hi-tech watches scheduled for launch later this year.

Rumours are currently swirling around the fabled device which will reportedly house no less than ten separate sensors to track health and fitness data, part of efforts to create a new product line to offset a slowdown in growth of both smartphones and tablets.

Technology firms are increasingly eyeing future growth from the wearable technology sector, undeterred by lukewarm sales figures from the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smart watch.

Worldwide shipments of wearable devices totalled just 2.9m in the first quarter, a tiny fraction of the 300m smartphones shipped over the same three month period.

Google meanwhile is looking to garner a slice of the action via its Android Wear division, which is seeking to adapt the Android operating system for use in wearable technology.
