The government has urged mobile phone operators to share transmitter masts in order to bring better network coverage to rural areas.

£150m has been ploughed into improving mobile coverage in so-called ‘not-spot’ areas where only certain operators can offer often unreliable coverage.

Under the plans, users would be allowed to ‘roam’ freely from one network to another if their own is unavailable.

"The government has made clear it wants to ensure the UK has world-class mobile phone coverage as part of our investment in infrastructure for the long term economic plan,” said a spokesman for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

"We are investing up to £150 million to improve mobile coverage in areas where there is currently no coverage from any of the mobile network operators.

"Of course we want to look at what more can be done in areas with poor coverage."
